How does Barium Carbonate Contribute to Half of the Color and Quality of the Glaze?

Publish Time: 2026-03-03     Origin: Site

As we stroll through the ceramic exhibition hall, we are always drawn to those colorful and lustrous ceramic works - whether it's the Ru porcelain with a color as clear as the sky and as smooth as a mirror, or the Jun porcelain that shines with a brilliant glow like the setting sun. But few people know that behind these stunning colors and the solid bodies lies a seemingly ordinary yet crucial raw material - barium carbonate.

I. Low-key yet extraordinary chemical properties

Barium carbonate (BaCO₃) is a white powdery inorganic compound that, at first glance, seems no different from ordinary chemical raw materials. However, it possesses several sets of key characteristics that can be described as "ceramic-friendly":

1. High melting point and stable chemical properties: The melting point of barium carbonate is as high as 1740. It is not prone to decomposition under the high-temperature environment of ceramic firing and can function stably. At the same time, it does not dissolve in water at room temperature and only dissolves in strong acids. This means that during the glaze preparation and clay body molding stages, it can maintain a stable form and avoid unexpected reactions with other raw materials.

2. Unique melting aid and flux effects: As a high-quality flux, barium carbonate can lower the melting temperature of the glaze. When the kiln temperature rises, it reacts with the silicon dioxide and alumina components in the glaze to form a low-melting-point glass phase, allowing the glaze to fully melt and flow at a lower temperature, thereby reducing energy consumption and making the glaze surface more uniform and smooth.

3. The "regulatory power" over metal ions: The barium ions (Ba⊃2;⁺) in barium carbonate have a strong ionic potential, which can form stable compounds with metal colorants such as iron, manganese, and cobalt in the glaze. This not only fixes the color but also adjusts the hue concentration of the colored glaze, making the ceramic colors more vibrant and lasting.

II. From the Laboratory to the Kiln: The Industrial Application of Barium Carbonate

In the modern ceramic industry, the value of barium carbonate has far exceeded the scope of a single raw material. It is not only the "colorist" of traditional art ceramics, but also an indispensable "backstage hero" in fields such as architectural ceramics, daily-use ceramics, and electronic ceramics. In tile production, barium carbonate can significantly improve the glossiness and wear resistance of the glaze surface; in the field of high-voltage electrical ceramics, its stable dielectric properties ensure the safety and reliability of insulators; and in the research and development of special ceramics, high-purity barium carbonate is the key precursor for preparing electronic functional materials such as barium titanate.

Looking back at the precious ceramic treasures displayed in the showcases, what we see is not only the ingenious ideas of the craftsmen and the art of fire, but also the precise molecular - level coordination of basic raw materials such as barium carbonate. It does not vie for attention in the finished products, yet with its stable chemical properties, excellent fluxing ability, and precise color - adjusting function, it silently supports the ceramic industry's leap from traditional handicrafts to modern manufacturing. Perhaps, just like the ceramic culture itself - true beauty often stems from the invisible perseverance and accumulation. The next time your fingertips glide across a warm and smooth porcelain piece, you might as well ponder: within that alluring glaze color lies the chemical wisdom of barium carbonate that has spanned thousands of years.
